A major political shakeup in Thailand, where the constitutional court ousted Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office, led to Paetongtarn becoming the country's 31st prime minister in August 2024.

Sworn in just before her 38th birthday, she is the nation's youngest-ever head of government.

Paetongtarn is the youngest daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire who served as prime minister from 2001 to 2006. Her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, held the post from 2011 to 2016.

Before becoming prime minister, Paetongtarn held a variety of roles within her family's business empire, which she was required to relinquish before being sworn in.
